We are broVo Spirits- women who cashed out their 401k’s in 2011 and started making liquor.
What started it? A desire to make real products, that we could stand behind and that used real ingredients. There’s a little bit of Portlandia in us, while we don’t name the plants personally, we do like to know the farmers who grow them or the foragers who find them, in the case of our Douglas fir.
Our distillery name is a combination of our last names- Brophy and Voelsgen or broVo. Every bottle has our name on it, so we want to make something we can be proud of.
We hired Mac Kenney to work with us in 2013, to help craft the liquor as we grew in size and product range.
We started working directly with bartenders in 2012. While most distilleries say they work with bartenders, we actually do. Bartenders write the recipes for our amaro line, and they sample along the way as we duplicate their recipe.
